Who We Are

We span the globe through 30 independent members who are engaging in international solidarity, cooperation and development

About us

The Federation for Associations connected to the International Humana People to People Movement comprises 30 independent national member organisations. Our members and associates work in 49 countries across five continents.

Our programmes include Education, Health, Sustainable Agriculture, Environment, Community Development, Humanitarian Action, and Reuse and Circularity in Textiles. We actively integrate climate actions across all areas and work closely with communities to strengthen climate adaptation and resilience.

We have always engaged with local communities by listening to their needs, learning from their experiences, and incorporating their perspectives into our programmes. This collaborative approach strengthens our development strategies and our responses to emerging, complex challenges.

We align our development work with the UN 2030 Agenda and with national and continental development strategies. Together with the people in the communities and our numerous partners, we continue to stand by countries as they strive to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, creating lasting positive change in the process.

Chairman’s Welcome

History

We grew out of a progressive education movement in the 1970s, rooted in the struggle against apartheid and colonialism. We were founded by a group of people who cared deeply about the lack of equality around the world and who decided to change it.

We entered into development cooperation agreements with national governments to expand our development work, starting in southern Africa and moving into Asia, Central and South America. Our long-standing tradition of creating change together with and as part of the people characterises how we have built our activities on local participation throughout our journey since the beginning.

The Federation for Associations connected to the International Humana People to People Movement – in short, the Federation – was formally established in 1996.

Several decades after we began, the needs of our planet and its inhabitants are more urgent and complex than ever. Today, we remain committed to addressing some of the world’s major humanitarian, social and environmental challenges.

Over the years, we have transformed our development approaches to respond to the effects of poverty and inequality in the southern hemisphere. We have created a set of unique programmes, built on well-proven methods that have responded to the urgency of the challenges and continue to do so.

Today, the 30 member associations are independent national not-for-profit organisations that work in 49 countries across five continents, including Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

NGB NGO Governance Benchmark

The Federation Humana People to People has been certified through an external audit by ACPO SA of Switzerland for governance policies, procedures and their implementation, using the NGO Governance Benchmark by NGO Governance Standards SA of Geneva, Switzerland. The standard was developed by Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) to provide non- governmental organisations with a management tool to highlight their key strengths and weaknesses in their operations. It targets three key objectives: 1) show evidence of accountability, 2) strengthen trust concerning their donors, and 3) highlight areas of improvement to foster operational efficiency.

Our organisation received its first certification in 2018, had it renewed by SGS in 2021, and was ranked among the top 5% of organisations certified under that system.
